Using Topical Essential Oils Safely

Some essential oils can be used topically and some should not. If you’re not sure how to use essential oils topically I recommend the prediluted Roll On Complete Kit or Kids Roll On Daily Kit or any Roll On individual. There are so many to choose from!

Those of us who are familiar with topical blending know that you must mix many essential oils with a Carrier Oil to avoid a possible skin reaction or Herxheimer reaction. A Herxheimer reaction is a bodily process that happens when toxins are removed too quickly causing discomfort.

A carrier oil is a thicker oil which when blended can dilute the strength (see chart) of the essential oil, help it absorb, nourish the skin, and make the scent last longer. For example a scented massage oil.

Carrier oils include but are not limited to:

Carrier oils are divided into categories. There are nut oils, seed oils, fruit oils, and essential fatty acid oils. Each has a different potential effect on the skin and properties that my enhance your desired use.

Reasons for negative reactions to topical essential oil uses:

  • your oils may be synthetic or adulterated, only use high quality pure essential oils

  • you may have body soap or lotion chemicals on your skin that interact with the properties of your oils

  • certain medications may cause skin sensitivity

  • some oils should not be used on skin in direct sunlight such as citrus

  • do not use a “hot” such as cinnamon for example oil without dilution in a carrier oil

  • your clothes may have chemical treatments and may irritate the application

Some people complain about adverse reactions and the truth is the above reasons are usually to blame and not the actual essential oils. I use them all the time on myself and family for joint pain, skin care, sore muscles, headaches, and a variety of other uses. They work extremely well when used properly! My horses also love my homemade liniment!
